OUR COMMUNITY

WE BELIEVE THAT BEING PART OF A COMMUNITY IS SO IMPORTANT THAT WE PUT IT IN OUR NAME!

It's what motivated us to provide a space for people to come together and make new connections through their love of music. We host our weekly rehearsals, post-rehearsal social gatherings and arrange special events throughout the year for our members to enjoy.

Musical Director

paul hooper

Paul Hooper grew up in South Wales and began playing the trombone at the age of six in the local Salvation Army. During his formative years, he won numerous competitions, including winning the Brass Final of the Dyfed County Young Musician of the Year. He was also a member of the National Youth Brass Band of Wales.

In 1994, Paul joined the British Army as a musician, subsequently winning the Frank Wright Prize for the Best Brass Player of his year and the Cousin’s Memorial Prize, Silver Medal, for the best instrumentalist during musical training at the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall. Paul was then assigned to the Band of the Irish Guards, where he served for 26 years, with much of that time as the principal trombone. He has played on numerous state ceremonial occasions including the annual Queen’s Birthday Parade and the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall.

Notable highlights of his time in the Band of the Irish Guards were performing with the Household Division Fanfare Team with Robbie Williams at Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert on The Mall in 2012 and performing at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in 2018.

Paul performed on numerous CD recordings during his time with the Band of the Irish Guards, including recording a solo with the Band. During his time with the Band of the Irish Guards, Paul played with Guards Brass Ensemble of Excellence and latterly led the ensemble. Guards Brass performed with many notable artists, including Philip Cobb, James Fountain, David Childs and Adam Rapa.

A particular highlight of his time in Guards Brass was the recording of With Proud Thanksgiving, in 2021, with the Guards’ Chapel Choir. During his time in the Army, he has gained a BA (Hons) in Humanities with Music, an LRSM and LTCL in trombone performance and a Diploma in Music.

Alongside his main occupation, Paul has taught brass instruments for the last twenty years and regularly conducts wind and brass bands in his spare time. He is an active member of The Salvation Army and enjoys attending the theatre and exploring London. Paul is married to his wife, Lisa, a primary school teacher, and together they have four children, Eloise, Carys, Kaelan and Amalie.

We have a dedicated team of Trustees who volunteer their time to help with the day-to-day running of the Orchestra.
